Antibiotics and Their Role in the Fight
Against MRSA
Your immune system is powerful, and it defends your body
from infection every day. In most cases, you are not even aware
of the fight that is going on inside you as your immune system
takes down invading bacteria. But there are times when your
immune system will need a little outside help. Certain
bacterial infections such as MRSA are so strong and spread so
rapidly that it is difficult for your immune system to catch
up. When this is the case, antibiotics are needed to help
eliminate this life threatening bacteria.
An antibiotic will work in two different ways to kill MRSA.
First of all, it is a bactericidal which means that it kills
MRSA directly. An antibiotic is also a bacteriostatic which
means it inhibits MRSA’s ability to reproduce. This will allow
your immune system to eventually eliminate this infection.
The great thing about antibiotics is they can destroy
bacteria, but they do not harm the healthy cells in your body.
However, it usually takes about seven to ten days to completely
eliminate the MRSA bacteria in your system. You may begin to
feel better after a couple of days, but it is important that
you take all the antibiotics as prescribed.
Antibiotics have saved the lives of millions since their
creation. However, the overuse of these miracle drugs over the
years has led to the development of super bugs like MRSA
because they have become resistant to the antibiotics that we
use to treat them. This is a growing concern in the medical
community.
It is estimated that approximately two million people are
hospitalized due to bacterial infections every year. About 70
percent of these patients are infected with MRSA. Some of these
infected patients will succumb to this powerful bacterium.
MRSA was once confined to healthcare settings and hospitals.
However, now it can be found quite frequently in schools,
daycare centers and other public places. It is very important
that you learn more about these bacteria and how to protect
yourself and your family.
As the fight against lethal bacteria continues to grow, you
must take the steps to keep it from spreading. The best way to
keep yourself and your family healthy is to practice good hand
hygiene at all times.
